Chapter 16:
The children of Israel complain to Moses regarding not having any meat and bread. YHVH provides them manna to test whether they will follow His teaching or not. Their complaint is did YHVH take them from Egypt to kill them by famine.
They are to take a double portion of manna on the 6th day, and not gather on the 7th day.
Chapter 17:
4th complaint, why did YHVH bring them up from Egypt to kill, them, their children and their livestock through thirst.
Moses is told to strike the rock at Horeb. Their real question, is whether YHVH was among them or not?
Amalek came to do battle against them. (Amalek is a descendant of Esau, “people of lapping”; represents “I can do it spirit”). Joshua battled Amalek, while Aaron and Hur held up Moses arms during the battle. They battled all until sunset. YHVH maintains a war against Amalek, from generation to generation.
Chapter 18:
Jethro bring Zipporah, Gershom, Eliezer back to Moses. Moses tells Jethro of all of the greatness of YHVH and everything that He has dne for the Children of Israel. Moses judges the people all day long. Jethro tells Moses that he will wear himself out song this. To appoint men to help him judge between the people.
Characteristics of a Judge:
1. Men of accomplishment
2. God-fearing people
3. Men of truth
4. People who despise money
There will be leaders of 10’s, 100’s, and 1000’s. the minor matters they will judge between but the major matters they will bring to Moses.
