Conquests in Joshua
· Jericho – “it’s moon”
· Ai – Aija or Aiath or Hai = “heap of ruins”
o 1st time unsuccessful due to Achan (troubler), son of Carmi (my vineyard), son of Zabdi (endowment), son of Zerah (rising), son of Judah (praise) took the consecrated property and YHVH wrath burned against the Children of Israel.
o b. second time successful after Achan’s stoning and buriel at the Valley of Achor (trouble/disturbance)
· Conquest of the South
o in Gibeon (hill city) – these kings were pursued by way of the ascent to Beth-horon (house of hollowness) and struck them until Azekah (dug over) and until Makkedah (place of shepherds). It happened when they fled before Israel, they were on the descent of Beth-horon when YHVH cast upon them large stones from heaven until [they reached] Azekah and they died; more died through the hailstones than the Children of Israel killed with the sword. Joshua ordered the sun to stand still at Gibeon and moon in the Valley of Aijalon (field of deer).

§ Piram (like a wild ass), king of Jarmuth (heights)

§ King of Eglon (calf-like)
· Makkedah (place of shepherds)
· Libnah (pavement)
· Lachish (invincible)
· Gezer (portion), Horam (exalted), king of Gezer went to help Lachish. Joshua struck him and his people until he did not leave him a remnant.

· Debir (sanctuary)
o Joshua smote them from Kadesh-barnea (holy) to Gaza (the strong) and the entire land of Goshen (drawing near) to Gibeon (hill city). All those kings and their land Josh conquered at the same time, because YHVH, God of Israel, was waging war for Israel. Joshua and all Israel with him returned to the camp, to Gilgal (rolling).

o king of Achshaph (I shall be bewitched)
o kings in the north, in the mountain, and in the plain south of Kinnereth (harps), and in the lowland and in the districts of Dor (generation) to the west; the Canaanite (zealous) on the east and on the west; and the Amorite (a sayer), Hittite (terror), Perizzite (belonging to a village) and the Jebusite (threshing place) in the mountain; Hivvite (villagers) at the foothills of Hermon (a sanctuary) in the land of Mizpah (watchtower). They went out – they and all their camps with them – many people, [as numerous] as the sand on the seashore, and very many horses and chariots. All these kings gathered [together]; they came and encamped together at the waters of Merom (high place) to wage war with Israel.
